JCSER calls for protecting Palestinian prisoners' rights.

Since the Palestinian Prisoners' Day, which is observed annually on April 17, Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails went on hunger strike to protest their deteriorating conditions in Israeli jails.

Currently, more than 1600 prisoners are hunger strike. In addition of protesting against their imprisonment conditions, which worsen since the abduction of the Israeli solider Gilad Shalit on June 25, 2006, Palestinian prisoners also protested against the notorious administrative detention (imprisonment without trial) and denial of family visits.

Since the abduction of Shalit, Israeli Prisons' Authority cracked down on Palestinian political prisoners in an attempt to pressure his abductors to release him.

However, following his release, as part of the prisoners exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel on October 18, 2011, Palestinian imprisonment conditions have not improved and Israeli authorities continued with their policies of incarcerated the prisoners in solitary confinement, administrative detention, denying family visits, prohibiting the prisoners from pursuing their studies in addition to other punitive measures.

Ten of the hunger strikers are now in critical conditions and were transferred to prisons' hospital for urgent medical treatments.

According to international law, Palestinian prisoners are considered prisoners of war, and must be treated humanely in all circumstance. IHL provides them with protection against any act of violence, intimidation, insults and public curiosity. They should also be guaranteed with proper accommodation, food, clothing, hygiene and medical care.

JCSER believes that Israel should stop its ongoing arrest campaigns and set a timetable for releasing Palestinian prisoners, if it is truly wants to achieve peace with the Palestinian leadership. Until meeting that goal, Israeli authorities are obliged to honor IHL when dealing with Palestinian prisoners. "Any possible death for any hunger striker might only escalate the already tensed situation and might incite more violence in the region."

International community, namely the US, should exert genuine efforts to oblige the Israeli government to honor IHL particularly in the case of Palestinian political prisoners.
